Successful procurements mean Corby’s Urgent Care Centre will continue and an extra 1,000 NHS appointments a month will be available via a brand-new service

NHS Corby Clinical Commissioning Group has successfully procured two new contracts - meaning Corby’s Urgent Care Centre (UCC) service will continue and a new service providing 1,000 extra GP related appointments a month will be on offer to patients.

The UCC will now be run by OnePrimaryCare, part of OneMedicalGroup, until 31st March 2021. The service will continue as before and be uninterrupted. The new ‘Extended Access’ service will be run by Aspiro Healthcare who run Woodsend Medical Centre.

“On behalf of Corby CCG I am delighted to welcome the providers of both services to serve the health needs of the population of Corby. Both contracts will take effect from 1 April and the CCG will now work with the organisations to ensure a smooth and timely transition of services."

Toby Sanders, Chief Executive of Northamptonshire’s CCGs

The Urgent Care Centre will continue to open between 8am and 8pm every day of the year and during these hours, patients with the right need can walk in and be seen without an appointment.

The centre will continue to be available to all patients, including those registered with a GP practice, who have a pressing health need, which may include a minor injury needing additional immediate treatment/investigation (such as an x-ray), or a medical condition which is getting worse.

“The team and I are very much looking forward to working closely with NHS Corby CCG to deliver the Corby Urgent Care Centre to those in the community with an urgent care need, 8am until 8pm, 365 days a year.

“We recognise how well loved and valued the service is by the local community and are excited to have been given this opportunity to bring our experience of delivering urgent and primary care services across the UK, underpinned by our values of People First, Working Together for a Better Future.

“We are natural collaborators and are delighted to have the chance to work with patients and staff of Corby Urgent Care Centre, the wider population and the whole of the health and social care system on developing the service over the coming months and years. We look forward to welcoming the existing team into our group and working with them to transfer the service with a view to delivering excellent quality, patient-centred care to the Corby community at Cottingham Road.”

Rachel Beverley-Stevenson, Chief Executive of OneMedicalGroup

Corby’s new ‘Extended Access’ service will mean patients can book routine appointments with a GP or other appropriate clinician seven days a week. Appointments may be available for example with a GP, a nurse, pharmacist, mental health professional and what is known as First Contact Practitioner Physiotherapist.

The appointments will be available between 8am and 8pm on weekdays and there will be a number of slots available at weekends, Bank Holidays and over the Christmas and Easter periods. This will be tailored according to the needs of Corby’s population.

Aspiro Healthcare, the provider of the new service, will now work together with the five practices in Corby to ensure all patients in the town have access to the services.

Senior GP Partner Dr Akram Khalid from Aspiro Healthcare said:

“We are really excited to have been awarded this contract. We will work with the local practices and the patients to ensure that this truly delivers the highest quality of care for our patients.

“We look forward to working with all our local practices and clinicians and patients in Corby to ensure patients get the right service at the right time from the right clinician. We are an experienced provider who already provide a range of services such as urology, minor surgery and community ear wax from our site for patients in Corby and across north Northamptonshire.”

Toby Sanders, Chief Executive of Northamptonshire’s CCGs added: “We understand our patients are leading increasingly busy lives and there is now much more demand to be able to see a GP or nurse outside normal working hours.

“The GP Extended Access Service has been commissioned to make it much more convenient for patients to book an appointment at a time which suits them, including evenings and weekends. Patients needing a primary care appointment will still contact their GP practice in the usual way but now may be offered an appointment with the GP Extended Access Service, if this is right for them.”
