What is Pharmacy First?

The Pharmacy First Scheme, launched by NHS England on the 31st of January 2024, is a new service aimed at freeing up GP services nationally and providing patients with quicker care.

The new scheme will enable community pharmacists to provide care for patients without being required to visit a general practice. They can provide advice and treatment for 7 common conditions these are:

  • Impetigo (1+)
  • Infected insect bites (1+)
  • Sore throat (5+)
  • Sinusitis (12+)
  • Shingles (18+)
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (Women 16-64)
  • Acute otitis media (distance selling pharmacies not included)

Every pharmacist trains for 5 years in the use of medicines and managing minor illnesses, so they acquire the knowledge to provide care and advice. They also are experienced in knowing when to refer patients to a different healthcare provider.

How can I access the service?

You can enter your local participating pharmacy and request their help, after which they will provide care either on the spot or in a private consultation room. You may also be referred to the service by:

  • NHS 111 (online, telephone and NHS app)
  • Your GP if they have no or limited appointments and believe your pharmacy can help
  • 999
  • Emergency departments
  • Other urgent care services
